Hi there

1. you should keep the expression "in order to", so it would be "in order to not make any gaffes"
2. seems ok. just add "at" when you write "Therefore, they sat at home" or "stayed home"
3. Turn down the radio so I would be able to get to sleep.
4. I met her for the first time in 1998
5. I am looking for somebody "who is used to looking" after a baby
the expression is "to be used to doing something"
or "used to do something"
6.ok
7.ok. you can say, 'she could go' or 'she would be able to go'
8. I prefer using...rather than....
9.ok

but checks from a native speaker would be more valuable.
Students: Are you brave enough to let our tutors analyse your pronunciation?
Hello, Amandine!

re 5., I think the most probable here is "someone who is used to looking after a baby", not "someone who used to look after a baby".
I agree with you Pieanne!!
i was just giving the 2 models using 'used', but maybe it wasn't clear enough
-'to be used to doing something' is used to describe the habit of doing something in a present situation, which matches with the example provided
-'used to do something' is used to describe an habit that occured in the past
We do agree, then! Emotion: smile

hi.

I prefer *** "than" using ***

if it were "i would prefer", another can be "rather than",I thought.
I prefer using credit card than using check.true ?must it be "rather than"

4.It is 1998.I met her for the first time
(rewrite by using "when")
I met her for the first time when is in 1998 ,this is what I wrote in exam..
is "if not, I met her in 1998 when is the first time" correct? Emotion: sad

2.they sat at home.because a storm was....
rewrite:a storm was... . therefore, they sat home.

I mean, for example..
they sat at home.Because there was a dog in the garden..
rewrite by using "therefore"

pieanne, you wrote below..

-------
re 5., I think the most probable here is "someone who is used to looking after a baby", not "someone who used to look after a baby".
-------

is "someone who used to look after a baby" true?
why isn't "look" added "ing" at the end of it ?

-------

3. so that I can go to sleep/get to sleep

in the original sentense it is "...... I want to be able to get to sleep"

even though I made a mistake because of using "that" in stead of "so that", is it possible to write" I am able to get.." instead of both "I can" and "Iwould be" ?
also, we could't change any word..We might use what we was given.

thank you guys
Hello H.

I don't see Pieanne or Amandine online, so will try to answer myself.

In #6, you need an article:

6. You are not allowed "to" use a mobile phone in here

#9 would be more usual with 'just', or without 'have':
a) I'm looking for the person whose car I've just hit.
b) I'm looking for the person whose car I hit.

3. Turn down the radio so I would be able to get to sleep.
— this wouldn't really be idiomatic. You can say 'turn down the radio so (that) I can get to sleep'.

('...so that I am able to get to sleep' sounds a little awkward.)

Extra questions:

i) I prefer using a credit card to writing a check.
ii) It was 1998 when I met her for the first time.
iii) With the 'storm' example, what word will you use instead of the three dots?
iv) is "someone who used to look after a baby" true? ] Not correct, as Pieanne says.

MrP
I can't remember sentence with storm completely..

I prefer using a credit card to writing a check.
But, I have to compare two things. I prefer using a creadit cart than using check , isnt it true ?

I'm looking for the person whose car I've just hit.
You right.I wrote "I have just hit".

-----
It was 1998 when I met her for the first time.
----
It is true..How couldn't I write it Emotion: sad

thank you..
