Traditional would indicate an ongoing theme, to a certain group.

Classical would indicate a specific older time period, not specific to a certain group (until you gave it some context).

Sometimes they could be interchangable, but "traditional" usually sticks to ideals held by groups and "classical" usually sticks to era specific times.

Hi,

Here are my quick reactions to these terms.

How traditional is different from classical?

For instance what is the difference between

traditional music that is closely related to the culture and history of people in a particular region

and

classical serious music by serious composers. eg not "pop music" or "rock and roll"

music?

What about traditional and classical wedding party? I don't hear these terms used about weddings.

"Pop music" or "rock and roll" are not "serious music"?

Why the word "serious"?

Don't you think that is rather subjective and not a literal definition?

Here's a relatively short answer.

Traditional music is passed from one generation to another through imitation. It's not written down. It's also sometimes called folk music. It is normally played for very small groups of people, perhaps at village gatherings. It may be used to accompany dancing, but singing is most typical. The length of any given composition is usually five minutes or less. Each ethnicity or geographical region has its own songs and styles that have been passed down this way, and each has its own particular musical instruments.

Classical music is generally European music written for performance in a concert hall with a set of standard instuments - strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Compositions can be as long as 90 minutes in length, and audiences can number in the thousands. It is typical for this music to be entirely instrumental, though singers can also be included. Opera, which is a theatrical production that tells a story through singing, is another branch of Western classical music.

The word 'classical' is also applied to non-European music, for example classical Japanese music or classical Indian music. In this case it refers to the most artful kind of music that a culture has produced which has lasted through time - as opposed to popular music, which is designed for temporary amusement. In other words, classical music is art music developed in an almost academic way so as to produce the finest examples of music possible. The 'classical music' of a given culture usually has a large body of music theory that supports it. This is never true of traditional music.

I have no idea how these terms should be applied to a wedding party.
