So, finished this exercise, but I was a little unsure as to what exactly constituted a mixed conditional.

Also, I seem to have answered a disproportionate amount of the answers 'Second Conditionals'. I think I have over-represented this conditional! Feedback is greatly appreciated Emotion: smile Matt

Hi,

Here are the ones that I would correct (and I hope I haven't made any mistakes, but if I have somebody will fix them, don't worry! Emotion: smile):

1. If I knew where he lived, I’d visit him. 1- second
3. If I hadn’t picked up Martin’s wallet, he would be in dire straits now.
3- mixed (3rd)
5. If you had studied Spanish last year, you would have been fluent by now. 5- third
11. If you build it, he will come. 11- first
16. If only you had continued playing the piano, you would be an amazing player by now. 16- mixed (3rd)
17. If you are nice to people, they are nice back. 17- zero
19. We’ll go to the cinema, if the weather’s bad. 19- first
21. Had I had more courage, I would have tried to speak to the beautiful girl. 21- third
22. If Martin comes, we’ll pretend we’re not here. 22- first
24. If I had had more energy, I would have finished the race. 24- third
25. I would own my own house today, if I hadn’t foolishly given the other one away.
25- mixed (2nd)

If you need to revise rules about conditionals, here are the basic ones I was taught:

Zero: If + present tense ... present tense
First: If + present tense ... future tense
Second: If + past tense ... would + infinitive
Third: If ... would + perfect infinitive (= would + have + past participle)
Mixed: any combination of the above that makes sense Emotion: smile

Once mastered the basics, the next steps about conditionals are, I think, the use of modals (If you finish your homework, you can have an ice cream; If I could travel I'd be the happiest person in the world) and inversion (as in #21).

I see you're from Caerdydd ... How I miss it! Emotion: sad

I found that 11 out of 25 were wrong.

You might have done better if you had answered randomly. You are obviously just guessing. What seems to be the problem? How are you going about this task? Are you having trouble identifying verb tenses?

Try using the search box or Google and looking at the hundreds of posts on conditionals and take a good look at Tanit's advice above.

This isn't correct, sentence one is the second conditional- I haven't checked the rest but if the first one is wrong, there's not much hope for the rest of them!
