A funny one:

My (heavily prescriptive) university textbook of English said:

"cook on gas" is never used by native speakers. Use "we have a gas stove" instead.

1) However, owning a gas stove doesn't mean you actually cook on it. I like "we cook on a gas stove" better. (It may not be correct, I've made it up myself)
2) I've heard "We cook on gas" in some American films.

Where's the truth, then?

P.S. Something tells me that this wasn't a good way to write chapters dealing with mother tongue interference. Emotion: wink

If that helps, you don't find "cook on gas"
in the English literature sites I made a search on.

Thanks, it does help.
Students: We have free audio pronunciation exercises.
We cook WITH gas. Made even more popular by a celebrity chef who says "Now we're cooking with gas" as part of his schtick.

Thanks, I will use it. I hope nobody will ever interpret it as "we use chlorine and phosgene as ingredients". Emotion: big smile

What about my "invention": we cook on a gas stove - does it sound natural at all?
Um, it does, but it's hard to imagine when you'd use it.

A: Hey, can you imagine how our ancestors had to cook over an open fire! That must have been hard.

B: Yeah, it sure is easier for use because we cook on a gas stove.

More likely would be: Do you guys have an electric stove? No, we have a gas stove.
Students: Are you brave enough to let our tutors analyse your pronunciation?

We've come full circle: that's what was in my university textbook. Still, that book did have issues.
