My teachers would mark "despite of (+ noun)" wrong, and taught me to use either "despite (+ noun)" or "in spite of (+ noun)" instead. [:^)]

You're right. I'm afraid this is another case of my expectations getting in the way of my actually reading the post. I just saw "despite" and ran with it. Sorry for the confusion.
