Hello Everyone,

My name is Raul, I'm from Portugal, and I came across this forum while searching the web for a "clean" and objective way of writing a Covering/Motivation letter.

I'm applying to an art undergraduate degree in an University in England and I would like to know your opinion on the motivation letter I wrote.

I thank your kind and effort.

[Q]Dear Sir or Madam:

I am a Portuguese citizen, my name is Raul Tavares and I am writing to apply to the BA Honours degree in 3D and Animation.

I’ve always been interested in traditional Art but lacked the opportunity to pursue my studies in that area. I had to start working early on because my mother passed away and I had to leave home and support myself. Although I didn’t have the time to fully commit to an undergraduate degree in arts I never lost focus on what I wanted. Throughout my spare time I slowly started to build up what I believe to be the foundation knowledge and practice required to attend to an undergraduate degree in 3D and Animation.

Video games and interactive immersive worlds have proven to be not only entertaining, but educational. They provide cultural enrichment, and social interaction. There is no limit to the potential in the video game design field, which is quickly becoming the premiere medium for cultural storytelling, information and entertainment. I am interested in studying the production pipeline behind the wonderful games, movies and other media that we come across everyday. Being able to learn from those that work in the area and share those experiences and workflows is worth every effort.

During the last year, I developed my drawing skills by taking private lessons and practicing life drawing on my spare time, because traditional art skills are fundamental on any artistic field. I bought good art books, from authors like Andrew Loomis, Harold Speed, George B. Bridgman, William Maughan, to try and work my way through both theory and practice. Aside from traditional art, I practiced my design and 3D skills from tutorials and by accepting and doing non commissioned work for friends. I continue working daily with Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign (design), After Effects and Sony Vegas (movie editing), 3ds Max, Maya and Zbrush (3d modelling, texturing, animation, rigging and sculpting) and recently finished an autodesk 3ds max certified course.

In , not only we don't have a gaming or animation industry, but we still lack the professional knowledge and the qualified individuals. So, during the last three months I have been gathering information on living in England and spoke to a few graduated students from to be aware of the requirements and better prepare myself. Being a self-taught artist in a field that has no existence in Portugal I realised that learning from experienced professionals and moving away from is the best decision I can make.

My ultimate goal is to work in the games industry, and I am willing to work from the ground up, pushing myself forward for better my self and achieve my goals. As you will be able to see from my portfolio I am excited and committed to my decision to pursue my undergraduate degree in 3D Animation and Games at .

Thank you very much for considering my request. I look forward to your positive response.

Yours Sincerely,

Raul Tavares[/Q]
