I don't know this one, but I'd take a guess and say it's a figurative expression meaning to get things readied for somebody else's convenience, such as in to start those things and have them running.. .

You warm "a" seat for someone, not "the". It means to keep a position alive awhile so that a better-qualified person can eventually take your place. You don't see it much.
