Where I live it's usually birds, that is "some unidentified birds", not the birds, that fly in the sky. But then if you are thinking of a particular group of birds, maybe a group of birds you have been talking about, you could say "the birds". And if you are thinking of birds as opposed to other flying creatures, you could say "the birds". (The birds are flying, but the butterflies are resting.)

Maybe you don't realize it, but you are answering a question that was asked many years ago.

Why not answer questions that are more recent? That way there's a better chance that the person who asked the question is still participating on our forum and can benefit from your answer.
