The flower smells sweet/sweetly? And why?

The flower smells sweet.

Here we mean the smell of the flower and not what flower does. And, of course, flower is not considered as an actor in any case.

Irina_blondy The flower smells sweet/sweetly? And why?
sweet

You need an adjective (sweet), not an adverb (sweetly) after the linking verbs "look", "sound", "smell", and similar verbs.

The guitar sounds good (not well) in this room.
That dress looks too short (not too shortly) for you.
The milk smells bad (not badly); it must be spoiled.
