What does uninflammatory mean in thi sentence? As i swung onto the avenue behind her, there seemed to be a discreet, uninflammatory distance between us.

I would say that it means the distance was enough that it would not be likely to cause her to become irritated, angry or upset in some way.
I agree with Yankee, but it does seem like a strange choice (unless prior context somehow makes it appropriate.)
