Hi,
What is the difference between did and would?

Page 101, line 2, there's a sentence that reads, "They would not move." Why does it have to be would, instead of did?

Tom did not move. Just states a fact. Maybe he didn't want to move. Maybe he was dead. We don't know why he didn't move.

Tom would not move. He was unwilling to move. "He didn't want to move".

Best wishes, Clive
