Lorenzo Ghiberti used Alberti's new ideas on perspective to construct a second set of doors for the famous baptistery in Florence, Italy. Ghiberti is also famous for his compilation of medieval texts on the theory of vision such as that by al-Haytham. This is notable, as, until this point, there had been no connection made between the concepts of optics and vision to "those" of art. Ghiberti showed the relevance of earlier ideas on optics to the world of art.

The underlied part is ambiguous to me.

"there had been no connection made between the concepts of optics and vision" seems fine and easy to understand, but "vision to those of art" is difficult to understand.

And what does "those" refer to?

Those = the concepts.

Yikes!!! This is a totally hopeless structure. It's no wonder it puzzles you!

Here's the structure, somewhat more simply (I think):

Nobody made a connection between the concepts of X and Y to the concepts of Z.

The structure of a between phrase is supposed to be between A and B, and there is an and there, so on reading the sentence, we think the and goes with between, thus:

Nobody made a connection between the concepts of X and (the concepts of) Y.

That completes the sentence. So why is there more: to the concepts of Z ??? There is no structure in English of the form between X and Y to Z.

So then you have to backtrack. There is another structure that this might be, involving the word connection: a connection of P to Q. But there is no of in the sentence. That won't work.

It seems to me that X and Y (taken together) is one of the two components that go with between. So the sentence is trying to say:

Nobody made a connection between the concepts of (X and Y) and the concepts of Z.

-- except that the second and is mistakenly written as to, probably for two reasons.

1. The first and makes the writer think he has already closed the between X and Y structure, and makes him think he doesn't need another and. Besides, X and Y and Z probably seemed wrong to him, even though it is the solution to the problem.

2. The word connection makes the writer think he needs the word to: connection of P to Q. But he neglects the fact that there is no of to complete that structure.

In my opinion, the sentence is not only ungrammatical, but a nightmare! Emotion: smile

Thanks a lot...

There had been no connection made between the concepts of optics and vision to "the concepts" of art.......

Still ambiguous to me. "between A and B" is easy to understand, but here, "between A and B to C" is used... Still hard to understand for me...
