Hi all,
Could you please help me with this sentence?

The full versions (of web addresses) cited in the list of sources are divided according to part (PARTS?) of the thesis in which they were used. I find it more lucid for the reader.

I´m not sure about the articles and using part X parts.
Hope it´s clear. There are two parts in my thesis and I divided the list of sources according to these two parts.

Thank you ;-)

IMO it would be more natural to use the singular, but with the article: "are divided according to the part(s) of the thesis in which they were used." Plural may be more correct, but use the article in either case.

You could also say, "according to which part(s) of the thesis they were used in," which may be a bit more natural and a bit lower register. ("They" used to frown on ending a phrase with a preposition.)

- A.

Edit. I'd also recommend using the present tense for both verbs: are divided - are used.
.
I'm not sure I understand what's going on, but I don't see how a web address can be divided-- then you'd have nothing useful. Perhaps you mean that the addresses will be sorted into different sections, or something similar? I also don't think you can presume the lucidity for the reader.

May I suggest something like this?--

The full versions of the web addresses in the bibliography are listed according to the sections/chapters of the thesis in which they were cited. I think that this will be more helpful for the reader.

That sounds perfect! That´s exactly what I wanted to say. Thank you, Mister Micawber and Avangi.
Hi, MrM,

Can I assume we typically think of "to cite" as a completed action rather than "are + past participle"?

I'm struggling to decide if there's a difference here between "to cite" and "to list" in this respect. That is, do we think of the action, "were listed" or the quality, "are listed"?

I hope I'm making sense. - A.

Edit. The "list/bibliography" swap works out great in eliminating the "divided versions" ambiguity!

It's a little late for me, too, Avangi. If I take your meaning, I would suggest that more germane is the nature of the writing. Here it is an academic thesis, where actions are minimal and conditions adhere.

I believe I see your point. Thanks, MrM.
Just an idea - what about I think that this will be more helpful for the reader´s orientation.

Editing text is primarily a process of eliminating words, not adding them. Don't let verbosity take hold of you. And 'orientation' often suggests sexual preferences.
