"Do I pay you or as I leave?" This sentence used in restaurant setting. What does this mean?

Thanks,

Do I pay you now or when I leave.

Some places with fixed cost for a meal, such as the buffet, will ask you to pay as you get in the door.

But most of them will wait till you are done with your meal. Then they will tally up your total including the tax. Then they will ask you to pay...including the tip!

I took the question to mean "do I pay you (the waiter/waitress) here at the table, or do I pay at the cashier's desk as I am leaving the restaurant?
