Despite all this, he is visually not a devout modest person at all. He is cocky, boisterous, gets in fights a lot & is always chatting up girls.
Basically, I think that mainstream British Education should use recitation/memorisation more often as a tool for learning. It can help even those with poor aptitude/temperament learn & achieve to high standards.

I fail to see what high standards your friend has achieved with all his memorization of religious texts-- he seems to be as much a bozo as if he had done no studying at all.
He can recite the entire Q'uran and several volumes of hadith (I think 7) all in the perfect poetic phrasing, despite not even understanding Arabic.

This seems especially pointless. What knowledge does he gain from memorising what is to him just a string of sounds with no meaning?

Muslims believe that memorizing the Koran albeit not knowing the meaning will still increase their good points in their God's view.
