I have a text editing software that uses a markup synthax to bold, italicize, and underline text. What I mean by that is that for bolding text I surround the text with stars (an example), to italicize the text I surround it with slash symbols (/an example/), and to underline I surround it with underscores (_an example_).

Once surrounded with stars the text automatically turns bold on-the-fly and the marker symbols dissapear. To see the markers again I need to have the cursor positioned on the marked up text. When the cursor is not on the marked up text, the markers are hidden.

In the context above, does the text (command) below sound natural?

Display the hidden emphasis markers while the cursor is on a marked up text.

No. The cause-and-effect is missing. Maybe "To display the hidden emphasis markers, place the cursor on the emphasized text." Maybe "Placing the cursor on the emphasized text will display the hidden emphasis markers."

Thank you. I appreciate your time. I would like to make it sound like a command. Does this work?

Display the hidden emphasis markers when the cursor is on an emphasized text.

Not so much. Maybe "Display the hidden emphasis markers by placing the cursor on emphasized text."

Thank you. But how about this context?
