I noticed an FB invite for Dov Simen's Two Day Film School coming to Detroit and just wanted to know what the group knows about him. The 48 Hour Film Challenge is that weekend, so it looks like I won't be able to make it, although I'm just a writer on the project, so my responsibilities should be complete by Saturday.
The biggest problem with Michigan's film mania is that these seminars and stuff are a dime a dozen right now, except this dime costs $400.

I think you are gonna learn way more filmmaking by wrestling with the 48HFP than you will from listening to a Guru talk. I havent taken his course, but I think SS Semen goes through everything. Business, insurance, distribution models and all that stuff as well as what Master Shot and Over-The-Shoulder are. But what do I know, I havent taken the class and really have no idea what goes on in his seminars. Good luck.

Dov is a nice guy... he's mellowed a bit.
The bad thing about his class is that (when I took it a decade ago) he did not respect screenplays and writers. He says to pay the writer next to nothing, and if the writer asks for more just find another writer. I think this may be why we have so many really crappy low budget genre movies.
The good thing about his class: he takes you step-by-step through everything. How to budget, how to rent equipment, how to find a distrib, etc. You come away thinking you can do that - you can make a film. Now, most people don't make a film, they just take the class. But, aside from the information, I think the inspiration was the best part of the class. Problem is, you have to do something with it. I still have all of the forms and stuff from the class in the back of my office Closet Of Doom somewere...

Somewhere between snake oil and Tony Robbins. He'll get you fired up but most of his business model requires people to work for free, or for a nonexistant back end. Also, ask yourself - if you could get a useful education in film in a two day seminar, why would anyone bother to go to a four year institution? For $400 you can buy a lot of books, any one of which will give you a lot more useful info, in a lot more practical form. Seems like Dov himself has a book, and it's got to be less than four bills. Unless you need someone to scream encouragement at you for two days, save your money.

Bobby's better, quarter the price.

Lo and behold, after everyone here gave me some background, CNN does a story on these $400 filmmaking seminars coming into Michigan. And it wasn't pretty. Thanks again, everyone.
