Hi,

The packed city center was evacuated after the man attempted to detonate a bomb at the Giraffe restaurant, one of a chain of eateries popular with families.

Can I replace eateries with restaurants without change of meaning? Yes, but it would be very poor style.

Best wishes, Clive

eatery is a very small, modest restaurant ...

Clive, could you help me understand why it would be poor style besides the repetition?

By the way, can I call a hotdog stand an eatery? I'm trying to see if there's any difference between the two.

Thanks in advance!
