Hello sir,

Would you be so kind to tell me which grammatical structure I should use ?

The scene is I am talking to my friend over phone to ask him whether he reached home or not, so I say to him.

1) I thought , you would have reached home by now.

2 ) I thought, you will have reached home by now .

Which one is correct? If the sentence is wrong , then How should I say in English ?

Thanks in advance.

ritikThe scene is I am talking to my friend over phone to ask him whether he reached home or not, so I say to him.

Me: Are you at home now?

My friend: No, not yet.

Me: My goodness, you are not home yet? I thought you would have had enough time to get home. Was there a bad traffic jam? Was the bus late? Did you stop off at the grocery store?

My friend: No, I ran into Susie on the way home and we started talking. I lost track of the time. I'll be home shortly.

ritik1) I thought [no comma] you would have reached home by now.
2) I thought [no comma] you will have reached home by now.

'will' is a present form.
'would' is a past form.

'think' is a present form.
'thought' is a past form.

'know' is a present form.
'knew' is a past form.

We match the tenses as much as possible, but especially in clauses after forms of 'think' and 'know' and their synonyms.

I think I will leave at 8.
I thought I would leave at 8.
He knows that I will be home soon.
He knew that I would be home soon.
We believe that this method will work.
We believed that this method would work.

(We can talk about exceptions to this rule later. Exceptions don't apply in your examples.)
