By extreme coincidence, I've just seen Artemis Ward author Eoin Colfer on TV and the programme host referred to him several times by first name, pronouncing it as an English person would say 'Owen'. I assume this was with Mr Colfer's consent as he looked a feisty individual who would not be shy of bringing up short any who displeased him.

Until the post in this thread, I had never heard of Colfor or his characters. Now, references seem to be popping up everywhere. Someone yesterday mentioned Artemus Gordon (Wild Wild West) and added that Ward was the Artemis that the current generation knows. Who knew?

Now I'm thoroughly confused: I just came back from Washington DC, where Artemas Ward, the 18th century general has a Circle named after him. I know that there was an Artemus Ward, nom-de-plume of a 19th century writer, but who is this "Artemis Ward" lady?

That is a puzzle. Why I went along with "Ward" instead of "Fowl", or why John started it, is beyond my ken.

I have seen an episode of 'Father Ted' that had a character called Eoin McLove. His name was mentioned several times. My impression was that it was very close to 'Owen' but it had a particular emphasis on the final letter so it sounded much like 'Ownn'. I have always found it fascinating how the pronunciation of Gaelic names diverges from what I expect. Some of my favorites: Aoife, Niamh, Siobhan and Taoiseach (I know this is a title).
Night Of The Nearly Dead
Mrs Doyle wins a meeting with her idol Eoin McLove (Patrick McDonnell), but when he comes to Craggy island, the parochial house is besieged by fanatical old ladies who share her love for the handsome TV star.
I've just found this group and I'm thrilled to find a place where I can argue about English words and their meanings. Always wanted such a place of discourse. I came here for an argument. Nudge, nudge. I note that this group comes with its own built-in complement of trolls. Present company excepted, of course.

Wrong group I'm afraid. Everyone will agree with absolutely everything you say - about anything at all on this site.
