1 cope
1. To contend or strive, especially on even terms or with success: coping with child rearing and a full-time job
[Am. Heri. Dictionary]

"on even terms" - to have equal standing in regard to each other. So, the definition woul mean to contend or strive against someone having equal standing. I don't understand that "with success" part. Please help me with it.

Hi,

Let's assume that I'm in a boat and I have a bucket.

My boat starts to leak. Water starts to come in.

I start using my bucket to bail out the boat (ie throw water out).

If I throw out the water at the same rate it is coming in, I am coping. (Think of it as 'I am on even terms with the ocean'.)

If I throw out the water faster than it is coming in, I am coping. (Think of it as 'I am winning, I am having success'.)
