It is thought to be basically a Hittite settlement ---- there are some traces of earlier civilizations.

A) in spite of
B) even so
C) instead
D) even though
E) in case

Hi,

This question was asked in a test which was administered nationwide in Turkey in 2000. The official correct answer was not declared, but I think that it is D. I wonder why B would be wrong. Is it only a matter of punctuation? The institution administering the test is notorious for its carelessness about punctuation in the writing of the test. If it is punctuation that makes B wrong, then it is indeed ironic.

Hello,

This is my take:

I was taught that "even so" means "despite" so it will not be okay to use it there. Maybe the people who prepared this test regard "even so" as "despite" and accept B wrong. You know a phrase can be used after "despite", not a full sentence.

Hello CJ,

Does "even so" have the same meaning with "even though"? Can "even so" be used as "despite"?
