Could you please explain to me what the phrase "for extended period of time" means generally? I guess it means "for some period of time".

Hi, gary,

We'd say, "for an extended period of time," or "for extended periods of time."

"Extended" means "lengthened," so it can be "longer than expected," or in the case of habitual behavior, "for [long,] unspecified periods of time."

He would get drunk, and stay away from home for extended periods of time.
