Overall, two of the materials (paper and glass) were recycled from the start; aluminum began in 1986 and plastics in 1990. The earlier that recycling of a material began, the higher its rates were. Throughout the entire interval, paper had the highest percentages, followed by glass, aluminum and plastics.
In detail, the majority of paper was recycled, although its rate peaked in 1994 at 80% and it began a slow decline thereafter to 70% in 2010. For glass, half or more was recycled in both 1982 and all the years after 1994. There was a dip in its curve from 50 to 40% from 1982 to 1990. In contrast to paper, it rose slowly from 1994 onwards, ending at 60%. Aluminum showed the greatest rise, as it went up continuously between 1986 (5%) and 2010 (45%). Plastic was the latecomer but, like aluminum, went up over time. However, its rate of increase was very slow and it never achieved a percentage higher than 9%.
