Later I discovered a proposed English alphabet, which Bernard Shaw had left money in his will to develop. I tried ... one else can read it, and so the only thing I've continued to use it for is my personal diary.

Ah, the Shavian alphabet. I once tried to master it, but never could remember what letter went with a given sound.
For others who feel interested, Google-searching will unearth an abundance of web-pages about (and, some of them, partly in) Shavian writing.

There was also a fuss, in connection with the same building, over the logic of placing some desks in positions ... was finally achieved came in the form of a directive ordering lecturers not to use the blackboard in those rooms.

If you want Stupid Blackboard Tricks, consider this - which admittedly goes off-topic, except that just-about-anything which makes it difficult to learn how to handwrite affects left-handers far more than right-handers:
in too many schools, blackboards along (only) the front wall of the classroom co-exist with "politically correct" seating-policies (called "learning pod" seating, or some such) in which students sit in small groups all around the perimeter of clusters of desks, facing inward to see & work with only each other rather than the teacher. This means that, at any given moment, about 75% of the children in the classroom must turn their backs or sides to the blackboard and to the teacher. Imagine trying to (for example) teach the lefties in your classroom how to hold pen/paper, while most of them cannot look at your demonstration but only at their right-handed seatmates ...

For a right-hander to wind up with a lefty is ... left-hander to wind up with a righty, don't you agree?

I don't agree - I write right-handed, and cannot use a left-hand tablet-arm desk for anything except giving me a backache as I try to write.

I was simply thinking of the fact that German for "sorry" is a longer word. They seem to have unusually long words for many common things.

Well, I've just started studying Korean, and (to judge from what I've learned in the very, very few lessons I've had so far) almost anything (even simple things like "I want a drink") requires about 2 to 3 times as many spoken syllables in Korean as in English.

A mental typo, perhaps? (e.g., thinking "left" when you meant "right")

Re:
it was a craic

Excuse me, but I don't know "craic" and cannot find it in dictionaries.

Isn't that because it translates as "I want a drink and may the Blessed Leader Live Forever"?

No course in handwriting? Is that true in all American schools?

No, but fairly common. This may change, though, since more and more standardized exams in the USA now include handwritten-essay sections. (One USA exam-preparation company, The Princeton Review, has worked with me to devise handwriting-remediation/handwriting-instruction lessons for high-schoolers facing a major exam called the S.A.T. which very recently added an essay-section. Students have 25 minutes to handwrite 2 pages on an assigned subject, and the graders have two minutes to decipher and grade each essay. This has really shocked those
schools/students/teachers/parents who have spent the last decade or so assuming that legibility and/or speed of handwriting could not matter for any purpose any more.)

Re:
I can't imagine a high school with a course in handwriting. Locking the barn door, wot.

I have taught handwriting to high-schoolers in their classrooms and at the school's request ... and have also taught handwriting at hospitals to doctors/other staffers who'd gotten in trouble because of illegible writing. My classes, in either venue, have run to about 50% left-handers, sometimes including an occasional left-handed adult who'd gotten "switched" to right-handedness. (The most recent - and youngest - such adult I worked with, a 35-year-old nurse about 5 years ago, grew up in the Philippines.)
