Hi, Would you please tell me what is the meaning of retired and for what little it mattered in the following text?

Second,Sackett was dead. Four years earlier he'd been killed in a bar fight in Alaska. The news of his passing barely made it to Mississippi, and when his file retired in Lauderdale County, not a single reporter noticed. Barry Reinhart's exhaustive research discovered the truth, for what little it mattered.

Thanks

When you quote from a source, please check carefully that you have typed it correctly. I have corrected two errors below.

Second,Sackett was dead. Four years earlier he'd been killed in a bar fight in Alaska. The news of his passing barely made it to Mississippi, and when his file WAS retired in Lauderdale County, not a single reporter noticed. Barry Rinehart's exhaustive research discovered the truth, for what little it mattered.

retired removed from the set of active files. and placed in some kind of inactive archive. It's because the guy is now dead.

for what little it mattered It's a fancy way of saying that something didn't matter. In this case, it didn't matter that Rinehart discovered the truth.

Consider this simpler example. She hated me until she died last week.. I love her, for what little it matters.

Thanks for the reply and specially reminding me of my mistake and negligence. I have benefitted a lot from your comments and advice in the past and highly appreciate it. By the way I saw the figure 4 is typed in your comment. Does it mean anything?

Thanks

I don't see a 4. Maybe just a glitch of some kind.

Clive

Yes. Most probably it is the case. It appears in the second line of your reply a between the word have and the word typed. Thanks
