I assume you have looked in your dictionary, so let me just add to that definition by offering a few comments and examples.

I forgot my wife's birthday.

I forgot about my wife's birthday.

No real difference. I didn't remember it.

I forgot my keys. I didn't remember to bring them with me. eg I left them at home.

Here, I wouldn't say I forgot about my keys.
