If I try to help someone but this person never get it, then I give up and say: "forget it".
I my opinion it's very informal. What's the similar meaning in a formal style?

"Let's come back to this another time"

"Shall we try again tomorrow?"
For me that means more, that you really try it again not that you never try it again.

I agree, but it is a polite way of stopping an action without being unpleasant about it. I can think of no "politer" term for forget it, though you could perhaps say "Forget about it".
Well, if there isn't any politer way, I will use forget about it or just forget it.
I would think you were being very rude if you were to say that to me in that situation. It shows exasperation that the person is too stupid to understand you.

To be polite, you need to find a way to get out of the situation without suggesting that. Another way might be to say something about needing to go and do some other work, go off to see someone else, etc.

Interesting. What's about never mind? Could that be another possibility?
SpinnakerInteresting. What's about never mind? Could that be another possibility? No
You could also say something like this:
I guess I can't explain this very well. Maybe someone else will be able to do it better./Possibly John can explain it better.

(It's more polite because you put the failure on yourself rather than the person you're talking to.)
Nevermind, it's not very important (unless it's obviously very important :-) )
