I hope some of you can help me to explain the form of compound adjective below? I have some difficulties in indicating which is NOUN + PRESENT PARTICIPLE and which is NOUN + GERUND??

1. a beer-drinking scientist
2. beef-eating boy
3. hat wearing muslims
4. cattle-breeding center
5. bone crushing handshake
6. lip-smacking noises
7. boat-building history
8. life saving prow
9. gift-giving occasion
10. spine-chilling silence
11. it was awe-inspiring
12. ..... of sigh-producing satisfaction
14. yarn-spinning
15. food that is finger-licking
16. the moving sight that is nerve-racking
17. stomach-sickening way
18. fly-catching strip
19. energy-gathering function

Sorry, but I find this an unclear task.

For example, consider a gift-giving occasion.

You can consider 'gift-giving' as an adjective here, or as a gerund used as an adjective. It doesn't seem meaningful to me to try and classify it in the way that you are being asked to.

Actually I am working on my minor thesis about the translation of Hyphenated compound adjective into Indonesian. I take all the data from Yann Martel's novel Life of Pi. I found 300 data on it and some of them are in my previous question. Oh well it is my problem Emotion: big smile
