Usenet'sgotta be wrong - it's BY the neck - I would refuse to be hanged on a technicality! :-D
Sorry, just another example of how bad the BBC is getting! Historic fact and accuracy of detail are dead, just so long as they set their tv stories in the UK before the immigrants arrived in the 1950s. It is a racist organisation, and one that has lost all the standards it used to stand for. Shame, they used to make some really great tv.

Your point would look a bit less foolish if this had been broadcast on the BBC.

This show was originally shown on BBC and made for that broadcaster.
Hint: know what you're talking about.

Keep digging.
Foyle's War was commissioned by and shown on ITV as a replacement for Morse, I believe.
No connection to the Beeb at all.

Wikipedia agrees with you.
More importantly the maker of the show, Greenlit Productions, thinks it made the show for ITV1:

According to: http://www.capitalpunishmentuk.org/hanging1.html Up to 1948 the judge would say ... prison and may the Lord have mercy upon your soul".

OT, maybe; certainly OT this thread. Once at work I made a reference to "the Lord" and a gentile friend ... by "the Lord" when gentiles, especially Christians, use the word. What would "the Lord" mean in the sentence above?

IIRC the Apocalypse has Christ presiding over the judgement of the dead, which would seem most apt to this context. But in most circumstances (and neglecting the theological niceties of trinitarian doctrine) I'd take it more generally, as referring to the speaker's principal deity be it elsewhere called God, Allah, or Krishna.

Okay, thanks. It's possible my friend's remark was a non sequitur even by his standards, but he ended up saying it because he thought I had given him an opening to ask about something he was curious about. Maybe he had long been curious about it, but we discussed mostly work, and this was maybe his one semi-good opening to ask. Since he had no malice, I certainly didn't mind the question. But I was curious.

I call myself his friend because I liked him and I admired him and his work skills and some other things I forget now, and because I much repsected him for the following: I call him my friend, because when I had a very bad week at work, he went out of his way to invite me to a party at his house, a party he never would have invited me to it otherwise, because I didn't know him that well, and I think no one else from work was invited. He didn't try to discuss my bad week with me, he was just nice to me, and I still think he handled it great.
