I really don't know what variable nouns are and the word 'fruit' is one of them. Can anyone tell me more about them and help me decide if the following sentences are correct?

sentence1: I only ate a little fruit.

sentence2: I only ate a few fruit.

Thank you.

CleverbillyI really don't know what variable nouns are and the word 'fruit' is one of them. Can anyone tell me more about them and help me decide if the following sentences are correct?

sentence1: I only ate a little fruit.I ate only a little fruit. [small amount]

sentence2: I only ate a few fruit. There are only a few fruits that I can eat. [limited types]

Thank you.
I am very particular about where I place the word "only".....getting it as close to the word it applies to as possible ["only eat" would imply that I don't buy, wash, or peal the fruit....only eat it].
