I have a hard time differentiate them and tell how they are used in some situations, examples:

1. Blaming others won't do anyone good.

2. The glancing blow did little damage.

Aswers: 1. a gerund phrase used as a subject.

2. an adjective participle used to modify blow.

These are just 2 of the many confusing participles/gerunds/infinitives in variations practices Would someone be able to give me a clear and concise set of rules to tell (gerunds and participles) them apart? Many thanks.
