I read a lot of essays written by students practicing for the IELTS exam. I can tell if students have just memorized a lot of synonyms from a dictionary. Most of the time, these synonyms do not work in the context – the writing comes out like word salad. Memorizing words from a dictionary is not a good way to become adept in English.

Learning grammar is far more effective. If you can't write a correctly constructed sentence, no amount of vocabulary will rescue your writing.

Ideally you need both, but if I had to choose between grammatical writing that uses simple vocabulary, and ungrammatical writing that uses elaborate vocabulary, then I would choose the former.

Spelling: grammar

You can do very well with 5,000 to 8,000 words. Any more than that and you're mostly learning high-class synonyms. I'd advise learning those as you come across them in your reading. Just digging them out of a dictionary is not going to help much.

Actually, it doesn't necessarily show that, as you probably already know.

Perfection is a high bar. A mastery of the most used grammatical patterns can get you pretty far even if it's less than perfect. Once you get to that point you can gradually incorporate more advanced patterns into your writing and speech.

In any case you'll need both vocabulary and grammar. It won't do you any good to learn a lot of grammar when you don't have enough words to make intelligent use of that grammar, and it won't do you any good to learn a lot of words when you don't have enough grammar to form good sentences with them.
