"I had no sooner closed the front door behind me than the doorbell rang."
The sentence means "when I closed the door, the bell rang", or "as soon as I closed the door, the bell rang".

When you use "no sooner" in initial position, there is subject-verb inversion:
"No sooner had I closed the front door behind me than the doorbell rang."
"No sooner had we sat down than we found it was time to go." (= As soon as we sat down, we found it was time to go)

I hope it helps.
