Dear all,

I would like to know whether the following sentence is correct.

1. Soon after John had been released from prison in March, he kidnapped a youth and tried to kill him.

Thanking you.

That's correct.

But we often avoid the Past Perfect when words like 'after' make the sequence of events clear. Instead, we'd often say

eg Soon after John was had been released from prison in March, he kidnapped a youth and tried to kill him.
