I take the first as referring to activities intended to physically improve your personal appearance, usually performed on a regular (sometimes daily) basis. (Eg, combing your hair)

It would exclude things like exercising, going to the gym, giving special attention to your diet.

The second one I understand as non-academic activities performed in connection with your school attendance. (Eg, track team; glee club)
