We often refer to people without hope, suffering from addictions, homelessness, etc., as "living in the gutter." Many of these people don't want to live there, and many of them ("the guttermost") are turning to Jesus for help and are being transformed by God when they really desire to live a different life, a life that pleases God. No matter how sinful a life a person has lived, God can totally change him/her. Just a week ago I heard a man tell about how he had been addicted to drugs and alcohol, involved in crime, spent time in jail, etc.. He called out to God for help and forgiveness and is now living a totally changed life and telling others how their lives can be changed completely ("to the uttermost") as well.

I just found an article on the Internet about a book by that title "From the Guttermost to the Uttermost." If you're interested, check "Ron Larry."

Thank you.
General William Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army originally coined the phrase. He worked extensively with alcoholics and other addicts, as well as prostitutes in London's East End. Hebrews 7:25 says of Jesus: "Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them." General Booth meant that Jesus is able to reach to the lowest depths, to those who live by fishing food out of the gutters in the days prior to modern sanitation, and can save those people to the uttermost degree, completely changing their direction in life.
From the lowest part of your life, you may be a lier, theft, murder....whatever the case may be. You may not feel you can be delivered because of your sins. In whatever state Jesus saves because he loves us and he is a merciful God.

God is thee upmost. The only wise God. There is no one superior than him. He is a Sovereign God. Gutter most, some may say the least favorable because of their sins.
