Our educational institute has provided us with a book whose title is "A Handbook of Select Essays" and in that book essays of so many types are given. I think instead of "Select" it should be "Selected". Can someone please confirm which one is right?

One definition of 'select' is

of special value or excellence; superior.

So there's nothing wrong with 'select' even though the essays were obviously also selected for inclusion in the handbook.

It seems to me that it's a handbook of selected select essays, but who wants to put that awkward phrase in the title?

I agree. They may be extraordinary, but that is not what the title is supposed to mean.
