Hi teachers,

The first one is from The Mist. The actor speaks really fast in the movie.

1. Is it "have been" or "had been" here?

A: Lets see the damage [~ they're looking at a fallen tree after the storm ]

B: Norton's tree

A: You mean the dead one I ___ been telling him to take down for three years before it blew over?

2. Which of the following B's answers is right?

A: Mom, why didn't you tell me about the house?

B : I've been waiting for the right time / I had been waiting for the right time / I was waiting for the right time? /

A: And when would that be?

Thanks

Do you want to know what the actor said? If so, please provide the link.

Otherwise, it seems you want to know what is correct.

'have'

'I've been waiting'

'I was waiting' is also acceptable.

Hi CalifJim,

Thanks for your help.

Here's the link

I have trouble hearing I've been and I had been if either one is in this video.

Thanks

Hi CalifJim,

Sorry I forgot to mention it's 3:16

Thanks

TN

It's very casual speech. We sometimes leave out words. 'I been' is a very casual abbreviation of 'I've been', i.e., 'I have been'.

... the dead one I been asking ...

There is no 'have'. He doesn't say 'have' or 'had' or anything. Or if there's a sound there, it's a nearly inaudible 'v'.

Hi CalifJim,

Thanks for telling us.

1. Would 'I had been" also abreviated as 'I been' in causal speech?

2. At 3:36~ Did he say 'We've had .......'? Is there a a 'have'?

3. At 3:23 ~ Did the boy say "We/ It really got smooshed"? And what got smooshed?

Thanks again

tinanam01021. Would 'I had been" also abbreviated as 'I been' in causal speech?

No. I don't believe I've ever heard that abbreviation.

tinanam01022. At 3:36~ Did he say 'We've had .......'?

We've had mist on the lake before.

That's all.

tinanam01023. At 3:23 ~ Did the boy say "We/ It really got smooshed"? And what got smooshed?

Just the abbreviated form Really got smooshed.

It looks to me like some sort of house or cabin there got smooshed under the tree.

I suppose you've already tried turning on the closed captions (CC). Too bad they are computer generated and thus very inaccurate at times.

Hi CalifJim,

Thanks again.

In We've had, do you pronunce the abbreviated - 've -? If so, do you do it lightly and link to the next word Had?

Thanks
