Hi
Is this sentence fully natural?
He ruled his country with a lot of aggression and very stringent, almost inhuman policies.
Would under work at all?
He ruled his country under a lot of aggression and very stringent, almost inhuman policies.
Thanks,
Tom
These are the usual expressions you find online:

"Aggression" doesn't sound like it's the word you really want.

No. The country was under his rule. Under his rule, the country suffered.

My sentence closest to that of the questioner: Is this awkward?
He ruled his country very aggressively by adopting/with his stringent and almost inhuman policies.
He ruled his country with a tight fist, cracking down on any dissenters and employing stringent and almost inhuman policies.
Thank you. I had recently become familiar with the word 'tight-fisted' and therefore, at first, the word 'tight fist' sounded to me as either 'very angry' or 'unwilling to spend money' rather than as 'very determined'.
Though the word 'aggression' had already got picked out as an unsuitable or unlikely word, I still attempted to use it a little differently. But I seem to have made a bad fist of my yesterday's attempt to write this sentence! Most likely, I meant to write thus:
He ruled his country by very aggressively adopting stringent and almost inhuman policies.
Anyway. I am in the acceptance of the alternative words suggested by you instead of any form of the word 'agression' unless you come up with an acceptance for my modified sentence just above.
It should be "an iron fist".
