Hi

I happened to run into this phrase recently in a magazine. Does it sound natural to you?

He tried his foray into chess.

The newscaster tried his foray into comedy but was a flop.

Thanks,

Tom

Foray: an attempt at doing something new or something that you do not usually do

He tried his foray into chess.

He tried an attempt at chess.

Or

He forayed into an endeavor to try to make a go at chess.

Stringing synonyms does not result in a good result. It leaves the reader baffled.

It reminds me of the joke:

Let us commence to begin.

No, they sound odd to me.

Here are some possibilities:

He made a foray....

He attempted a foray....

His foray into comedy was unsuccessful.
