My grammar book tells me that I should use the definite article "the" in front of musical instruments, such as "play the violin", and so on. But I also read some webpages on which people do not use the definite article "the" in front of musical instruments, such as "play violin", and so on. Which is right? or are both the cases (the use and non-use of the definite article "the" in front of musical instruments) acceptable?, and what are the differences between them if both are acceptable?

Thank you very much!

.
Both are fine when speaking in general. Use the, of course, when speaking of a specific instrument: I'm playing the violin my wife bought me.
