OK. You're farther down the thread than I was. My comment applied only up to your concern about how clearly the form with "in getting" revealed who got the book. My comment had nothing to do with what Anon added later.

As for Anon's

The original sentence "Thank you for helping us in getting the new book so soon. " is semantically reasonable enough to show the intended meaning and the person saying it indeed knows who got him the book.

That's a different question. I agree with Anon's "semantically reasonable" remark. At least I did not sense that the sentence was confusing or ambiguous. That's why I joined the thread at all. I was trying to understand what you thought made the sentence with "in getting" unclear. I am unable to interpret the sentence in such a way that someone other than "we" got the book.

I am not sure this has to do with BrE and AmE. To me the " ..helped in getting.." is not a natural pattern, at least in the original question. Help - contains an element of "favor", or act of good deed. John was moving to his new apartment and he asked if I could help. I helped him move last weekend, and he is taking me out for dinner for helping him. So the context itself is clear that the helping was received as favor beteween good friends. The roles are clear. I helped, and he received my help. There is no need for John to say " thank you for your help in helping me move.." So the question about not knowing who actually was the person geting the book was inconceivable. "Thank you for helping me move" is clear and natural to me.

The question is not who ultimately gained possession of the book but how this came about, ie. who "got" the book in the sense of procured it -- for example, whether the other person bought it independently of us and then gave it to us, or whether they helped facilitate our purchase of it. Often "help someone in doing something" is used in the latter sense, but this particular context suggested to me that this was not the writer's intention, which indeed turned out to be the case.

Really? What's so special about the original question that makes "helped in getting" unnatural there?
