The following is the lyric of the song 'Holliday'. I can't understnad some of the meaning. I really want to know what is going on, what doest it mean 'it's unkind', 'if not then you will throw stone'...., what is the situation and so on. Somebody please help me! (I underlined the sentences I don't understand what it really means.)

Ooh you're a holiday, such a holiday
Ooh you're a holiday, such a holiday

It's something I thinks worthwhile
If the puppet makes you smile
If not then you're throwing stones
Throwing stones, throwing stones

Ooh it's a funny game
Don't believe that it's all the same
Can't think what I've just said
Put the soft pillow on my head

Millions of eyes can see
Yet why am I so blind
When the someone else is me
It's unkind, it's unkind

de de de de de de de de de de de de de

Yet millions of eyes can see
Yet why am I so blind
When the someone else is me
It's unkind, it's unkind

Ooh you're a holiday, ev'ry day, such a holiday
Now it's my turn to say, and I say you're a holiday

It's something I thinks worthwhile
If the puppet makes you smile
If now then you're throwing stones
Throwing stones, throwing stones

Hi,

(I underlined the sentences I don't understand what it really means.)

Lyrics and poetry often have an obscure meaning. I think the best way to look at it is that the meaning for me and the meaning for you may be different, because we each look at it through different eyes and ears. In other words, it means whatever you think it means.

Here are a few thoughts. But really, it's impossible to make any real sense out of this. Perhaps there was no real sense intended by the Bee-Gees?

Ooh you’re a holiday , such a holiday
Ooh you’re a holiday , such a holiday

It’s something I thinks worthwhile
If the puppet makes you smile
If not then you’re throwing stones
Throwing stones, throwing stones
I think throwing stones is either wasting your time or perhaps trying to be unkind and destructive.

Ooh it’s a funny game
Don’t believe that it’s all the same Life is not all the same?
Can’t think what I’ve just said
Put the soft pillow on my head Kill me, gently

Millions of eyes can see
Yet why am I so blind
When the someone else is me
It’s unkind, it’s unkind Life is unkind

Best wishes, Clive

The BeeGees and the Beatles are my all time favorite bands. To be honest, I know the song "Holiday" and can sing it too but I can't tell you what the song it's all about, much less translating it!

Thank you Clive! I am so much pleased because my guess was not that differnt from you. ( I am not English speaker, so...)

It's unkind, it's unkind.

I guessed 'it' would be love, but after reading your writing, that sounds better. Thank you.

If you don't mind, can you translate the song 'the Whiter shadow of pale' by 'Procol Harem' also?
Hi,

OK, post the song's lyrics here and we'll see what we can do, OK?

Best wishes, Clive
Hey, ok I realize you wrote this about 5 years ago, but I just read it right now, so I'll tell you what I think.

Just my opinion...

He's writing about someone who has fallen in love. When you fall in love, you do stupid things. Everyone else can see that you're being stupid, but you sure don't. Or even if you know you're being stupid, you can't seem to stop yourself.

"You're a holiday..." -- Talking to the one that he has fallen in love with

"It's something I think's worthwhile

If the puppet makes you smile" -- Because he is so in love with her, he will do whatever she wants him to do -- making him a puppet. But that's okay with him, as long as she is happy.

"If not, then you're throwing stones..." -- If she's not happy when he does everything she wants, then she's just being mean and judging him -- even though she's not perfect either. In the Bible, there is a verse where Jesus says, "He who is without sin, cast the first stone." But because everyone sins, no one could throw a stone, so they all left.

"Ooh it's a funny game

Don't believe that it's all the same" -- He fell in love before and thought he learned a thing or two, but it turns out that every time he falls in love, it's different. There are no rules and not much structure, so love can never really be figured out.

"Can't think what I've just said

Put the soft pillow on my head" -- Have you ever said something stupid to someone, and that person got mad at you? Then it comes to you when you're laying still on your bed and you just cringe, while thinking, 'Why did I say that?' Some people will bury their head in the pillow and let out their frustration by either crying or screaming or whatever.

"Millions of eyes can see

Yet why am I so blind" -- Obviously, he's in love and is not thinking straight.

"When the someone else is me

It's unkind, it's unkind" -- He knows he's not thinking straight, but just can't help himself.

Okaaay...that's what I think the song means, what do you think it means?

Really good possibility. I would just add a twist to explain why such a cryptic love song: if it is loving another man, it would explain even better all the still shadowy parts, starting with why it has to be so obscure.

I think the most important sentence in "holiday" lyric is : "when the someone else is me", he thinks he is the only love of his girl friend, but discovered that he himself is not the original couple but the 3rd person, therefore he is "the someone else".

Knowing that he is someone else, then, we can easily understand this is a sad song and also know why "millions of eyes can see, yet why I am so blind", then, it is reasonable for him to moan "it is unkind".

The rest has been explained loud & clear by another gentlman, he is super.
Throwing stones is to get rid of an annoying situation or shut someone up for good. The lyrics of this tune can easily be translated by anyone.
