Scientists tell us that females of all cultures make sexual connections through sequences of specific flirting behaviors. The ethologist Irenäus Eibl-Eibesfeldt captured this on film some 30 years ago, with a camera that appeared to point in one direction while actually shooting in another. He found that women of all languages, classes and religious backgrounds attracted men through the same gestures. This was further documented by psychologists who spent months scientifically lurking around in lounges, watching couples hook up.

1. What would be a good substitute for hook up?

2. What's so scientic about lurking? In other words, what's the meaning of "scientifically lurking"?

Thanks in advance!

Hook up = get together

Scientifically lurking is supposed to be humorous - ironic, if I may exercise my new found word power. Their purpose was scientific, but their method (though necessary) seems incongruous.

Sorry, Avangi but I have another question.

watching couples hook up.

Can I replace couples with men and women without change of meaning and sound natural?

You could, but be careful, as some "couples" are formed by two men or two women.
Optilang, you're back. I thought you were gone for good. Well, you were only away for a day or two but it felt like weeks to me. Emotion: smile

watching couples hook up doesn't imply existing couples, right? They are strangers to each other until they hook up, right?

I was away enjoying the very sunny weather.
watching couples hook up doesn't imply existing couples, right? - correct
They are strangers to each other until they hook up, right? - I would say from the context here, correct. However, a couple can be formed from people who know each other. To be a couple means to be an item, to be in a relationship. Generally you form a relationship with someone you already know.
Thanks, Optilang.
I believe for the purposes of this scientific study, taking place in the "lounge laboratory," a couple hooking up would be any two people who appeared to be "uncoupled" when they came in, and eventually began to act as a pair. Whether or not they're strangers is irrelevant, and unknown to the scientific observers. The subject of the study was specified as the gestures used by women to attract men.
