For instance, shouldn't Lord Rama actually be spelled as Lord Ram, because that's how we pronounce it? Why then do I frequently find an extra 'a' at the end in texts?

I always see it with an a at the end. How do Indians themselves write it in English? Surely there is an accepted form.

Our Sanskrit teacher once told us that we should be writing them without an "a" because it would give a false pretention about its pronunciation to a new reader. The actual pronunciation is "Ram" and not "Rama".
