When you feel old, you're old. I'm 33. And I feel I'm old.

You can look at it in terms of physical capacity. I was young until 59, when my back went and I had to stop canoe-tripping. I'll be middle-aged as long as I can walk the dog, mow the lawn, and shovel the driveway. After that I'll be old.

I don't think the terms commonly used relate to chronology, but to the stage of life you are at, judged in the main by your physical capacity and mental attitude.
I was defiitely young until well into my thirties, and would say I am now in middle age - possibly late middle age, at 59. I suspect I'll start to feel "old" around 70 ...
