Hi,

How do you pronounce “ Nortenos “ ? It seems this is a spanish word. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nortenos I have never learned Spanish, so I do not know how to pronounce a spanish word. So I was wondering if you could write the pronunciation of this word in IPA for me? I think that would make sense to me how to pronounce this word.

May I pronounce as /nɔ:rtənəs/ ? Or /nɔ:rtenəs/ ? What is your opinion?

Thanks for your help.

P.S. I am learning American English.

The r would be flapped in Spanish, but using a normal English r is fine if the word occurs in an English text.

The written form is Norteños. The tilde on that n is sometimes mistakenly omitted when it is written in English, and it's the element that brings in the /j/. ("y" as in "yes").

Hi, CalifJim,

Thank you very much for taking your time to look at my question again.

/nor 'ten jos/
I do not know how to pronounce this [ o ] you wrote down, is it equivalent to /ɔ:/ in IPA? So did you mean that this word is actually pronounced as /nɔ:r ˈtenjɔ:s/ ?

[ o ]

It's on the chart just above ɔ. It's not necessary to be that exact when pronouncing it in English. /ɔ:/ will do just fine.

(The final question )

Oh, yes, CaliJim, I found it! Did you mean /əʊ/ for [ o ] ? So it should be pronounced as /nəʊrˈtenjəʊs/ ?
