I am wondering means I am having doubt in the moment. I was wondering means I had doubt before but not anymore, right?

Alright, I could remember some days before when I was watching 24's DVD. I saw Bill talked to Karen in this way after they have solved the terror at that day.

Bill says ( or should I use said ?Newspaper say "says") : uh....I was wondering if we could have a breakfast together?

Karen says : Oh sorry not now, I still got something to bother with maybe next time?

Bill says: Sure Emotion: smile.

So what I am/was wondering is why did bill said was wondering instead of is wondering. Because as I know he was still wondering at the moment he talked to Karen.

Thanks so much. Sorry my English needs a big improvement...

.
Was wondering is also more tentative and/or polite than am wondering.

I agree, "I was wondering..." sounds much more natural, even though "I am wondering..." makes more sense grammatically in regard to the actual meaning.

I was wondering if we could have a breakfast together?

Does this sentence need a question mark? Is it wrong to change the question mark to a period?

You can use either a period or a question mark, but delete the article before breakfast.
Thanks a lot, AG.

I was wondering if we could have breakfast tomorrow.

If you say "I'm wondering" in place of "I was wondering," do you change "could" to "can"?
