hi~^^

nice to meet you.

I'm korean who studied english by myself.

While i was reading IHT(international Herald Tribune), there were some sentences i can't understood.

So, I'll thank U to help me understand these sentences.^^

When Prime Minister Wen Jiabao of China set off for a historic visit to Japan nearly two weeks ago, pundits in this region set the bar remarkably low: the very fact of the first visit by a Chinese leader in almost seven years was an achievement in itself, the line went.

can you see the bold charater??

set the bar remarkably low

the line went.

and next.

Pressure from nationalist voices in Japan for Abe to visit the shrine are certain to grow, but to do so now, after Wen's inspired soft shoe, would be judged by the world as a gratuitous insult.

after Wen's inspired soft shoe

and last,

This, mind you, came on the heels of a major flap over ~~

this sentence drives me crazy~TT.TT

Thanks for ur reading and help~!!
Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

When Prime Minister Wen Jiabao of China set off for a historic visit to Japan nearly two weeks ago, pundits in this region set the bar remarkably low: the very fact of the first visit by a Chinese leader in almost seven years was an achievement in itself, the line went.

can you see the bold charater??

set the bar remarkably low In this context, it means the pundits had very low expectations for the success of the visit.

the line went. In this context, it seems to mean that this was the common opinion that most people held. eg the 'party line' is the common opinions that members of a political party all share.

and next.

Pressure from nationalist voices in Japan for Abe to visit the shrine are certain to grow, but to do so now, after Wen's inspired soft shoe, would be judged by the world as a gratuitous insult.

after Wen's inspired soft shoe A 'soft shoe' is a careful and subtle dance. The expression is used figuratively to mean that Wen was/is very careful about all aspects of this visit. Perhaps he was/is trying to offend neither the people of China nor the people of Japan.

and last,

This, mind you, came on the heels followed closely

of a major flap a major alarm or panic shared by a lot of people

over ~~

this sentence drives me crazy~TT.TT

Best wishes, Clive
wow,

i understood it

thanx a lot~:)
